Betty Lou Poe Cecil, died peacefully at her home November 23, 2022.

She was born April 13, 1936, in Terraville, South Dakota.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Luella Poe and her siblings Donald Poe, Robert Poe, and Rosalie (Jack) Coleman.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. David Cecil, who she married in June of 1958, and their son, Eric Cecil, both of Kingsville.

In high school, she played the oboe and alto saxophone. She also performed in all the plays and musicals. She was voted Top Girl by her classmates every year. She was selected to attend Girls State as a junior.

She attended Black Hill State Teachers College for one year before moving to Oklahoma, where she earned a bachelor’s in English from University of Tulsa and a master’s degree from Oklahoma State University.

In Kingsville, she taught many years at local schools, including Ricardo ISD, Pan American Presbyterian School, Embry Riddle University and Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M- Kingsville).

After retiring from the education field, she opened The Needle Nook in downtown Kingsville. She also owned Betty’s Babies, where she created lifelike replica dolls adorned in detailed attire for local organizations, including the HM King High School Kings Ladies and the Brahma Band. These original works of art were especially popular as Christmas gifts.

Upon her second retirement, she continued to enjoy crafting and gardening with her family.

The family will receive visitors and their home at 1921 South Park Drive on Friday, December 2, 2022, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations in her memory to Animal Rescue Kleberg Inc, P.O. Box 1357, Kingsville TX, 78363.

Arrangements are under the direction of Turcotte Piper Mortuary in Kingsville.
