William Glines Hughes, 84, passed away on March 23, 2021 in Kingsville, Texas. He was born on June 24, 1936 in Harlingen, Texas to Melba Glines and William Hobson Hughes. William proudly served in the U.S. Navy as a sheet metal worker for 4 years, and 3 years in the Reserve. He also worked as a police officer for the City of Edinburg and Kingsville. He was an operator at Celanese for 25 years and he retired from there. William was a lifetime member of the Confederate Air Force. He was a life member of the Masons, and a Shriner. He was active in taking children to the Shiner Hospitals and driving his Tin Lizzy in parades. He was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Anabell Hughes Thorson; and niece, Maryly Thorson Charles.
William is survived by his wife of 56 years, Laverne Hughes; sons, W.G. Hughes, and John Hughes (Leslie); daughter, Julie Hickman (Doug); grandsons, Derick and Daniel Hickman; granddaughter, Tori Hickman; nephew, Greg Thorson (Dottie); and niece, Gay Thorson.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary. A funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2021 at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary. Graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at the Coastal Bend State Veteran's Cemetery.
