Jean Womack

Our darling, hilarious Jean Marie Womack joined the heavenly angels on October 1, 2020 at 92 years of age. Weeks before, she spent the day with her four living children and declared it one of the best days of her life. Jean Marie, or Granny Ree, will be remembered for her love of family, her biting wit, and for how fast she said her Hail Mary’s.

Born on January 25, 1928 to Clarence and Sophie May, Jean Marie grew up in Vattman, Texas alongside 13 brothers and sisters. From the beginning, family was the joy of her life. She graduated from Riviera high school in 1944 and attended Texas A&I, later becoming a teacher at Vattman school. In 1947, she married her Riviera sweetheart John Ramsey Womack, her “Jackie.” They built a family of five children together that grew into a loud and loving group of 49.

She was a homemaker in the best sense of the word, filling the house with memorabilia and antiques so that every item had a story. Holidays with Jean Marie were steeped in tradition, from personalized family member Christmas cookies to hand-sewn Christmas stockings. She was always feeding others; she hosted illustrious dinner parties and became famous as a local substitute teacher for bringing ice cream to all the students. She loved children, and each summer could be seen around town with all her grandchildren in tow, visiting for the yearly “grandchild week.” Her donations to local charity auctions were coveted items; she sewed a wardrobe full of clothes and accessories for antique baby dolls. She was active in the community as a member of the Kingsville Woman’s Club, Garden Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, and St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church.

Jean Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, John Ramsey Womack, Sr., her son John Matthew (Buddy) Womack, and several of her siblings—including sisters who “had the nerve to die out of turn” before her. She is survived by the families of her four sons and one daughter, John R. (Rick) and Cindy Womack of Houston, John L (Luke) and Debby Womack of Kingsville, Buddy’s wife Sherri Womack of Corpus Christi, John Adrian (Tiger) and Jeannette Womack of Mission, and Molly Jean and Michael Lesmeister of Spring. Her family includes 14 grandchildren: Ashley Womack, Ramsey Womack and wife Robin, Emily Kernek and husband Greg, Daniel Womack, Steven Womack and wife Sydney, Anne-Marie Womack and husband Stacey Branham, Luke Womack and wife Ashley, Laredo Womack and wife Karla, Brad Womack and wife Connie, T.J. Womack and wife Shanei, Allyson Pratka and husband Bowen, Leslye Womack, Quinten Womack, and Jacqueline Lesmeister. She was blessed with 18 great-grandchildren. Our family would also like to recognize Granny’s supportive caregivers: Ida Pruemer, Sandra Garcia, and Silvia Velasquez.

We’ll all miss her wit and wisdom. Jean Marie used to joke that she didn’t wear her seatbelt when driving to church because if God decided it was her time, then on the way to church was the best time to go!
