Eugenia “Jeanie” Sedwick Bissett passed away January 27, 2020 in Round Rock, Texas. She was 97.

Jeanie was born November 26, 1922 in Kingsville to Gene and Mattie Sedwick. She was preceded in death by beloved family members including her parents and brothers, Kenneth and Arthur James. Her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Linda Bissett, died in an airplane crash in March 1982.

She attended Lamar Elementary School and graduated from H.M. King High School in 1940. Jeanie entered the workforce and Texas A & I University only to have that interrupted by World War II as she married and moved with her husband. After WWII, she lived in Goliad and Cuero before her husband was recalled to active duty during the Korean War, assigned to duty at Gunter Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama and Madrid, Spain.

Following the military service, the family moved to Mathis, owned and operated Bissett’s Five & Dime, and Jeanie re-entered Texas A & I and began her teaching career. In 1967, she moved to Kingsville to continue her education at Texas A & I and teach at Ricardo I.S.D. Jeanie received both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees from Texas A & I plus certifications in School Administration, Supervision, and other areas. She also pursued and received the certificate of Registered Texas Assessor Collector and served as Ricardo I.S.D. Tax Assessor Collector for a period of time.

Mrs. Bissett was a classroom teacher in the Mathis I.S.D. for six years before moving to the Ricardo I.S.D. At Ricardo, she spent six years as a classroom teacher and 20 years in administration where she served as Superintendent, Principal, and Director of Programs. She retired in 1993 after more than 32 years as an educator.

Mrs. Bissett was a former member of the Kingsville Woman’s Club, the Goliad Literary Society, the Gunter AFB Officers Wives Club, and the Mathis Literary Club. She was active in professional organizations including the Association of Texas Professional Educators, the Texas Retired Teachers Association, Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association, and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International with membership in the local Alpha Lambda Chapter. She was also an active member of Seller’s Market from 1991 to its closing. After moving to Round Rock, Mrs. Bissett volunteered at the Round Rock Public Library and was recognized as Volunteer of the Year in 2018.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Dr. Jack Bissett of Austin; daughter, Joyce Bissett Nelson and husband, Randy of Round Rock; grandchildren Holly Bissett and Paul Bissett of Austin; Britton Bissett and wife, Amanda of Houston; Bleakney Bissett of Los Angeles, CA; and Emily and Bradley Spencer of Round Rock; sister, Joyce Sedwick Albrecht of Goliad; sister-in-law, Fritz Sedwick of Corpus Christi; three nephews, great nieces, great nephews, many beloved cousins, and other family members.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 31, 2020 at 1:30 PM, at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow at Chamberlain Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to Turcotte-Piper Mortuary, 205 General Cavazos Blvd, Kingsville, TX 78363.

In lieu of flowers, Jeanie would have requested memorials be made to the South Texas Children’s Home, P.O. Box 1210, Beeville, TX 78104; First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 751, Kingsville, TX 78364, or a charity of choice.
