Dr. Hueytzen James Wu, a beloved Professor of Mathematics at Texas A&M University – Kingsville, passed away on Friday October 2, 2020.  He was 74 years old.

James was born on December 30, 1945 in the small town of Hsin Chu, Taiwan.  In 1974, James left Taiwan and came to the United States to further his education.  His first stop was at Ohio State University, where on March 7, 1977, he received his Masters Degree in Mathematics.  He spent the next few years in Fayetteville, Arkansas where he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics from the University of Arkansas on May 17, 1980.  Dr. Wu was an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who was loved by many of his students.  His other passion was his research.  James was an excellent researcher as demonstrated by his publications.  Most notably, in 2006, he published a paper in Topology and Its Applications, ‘A net and open-filter process of compactification and the Stone-Cech, Wallman compactifications.’  This paper was ranked eighth in Science Direct Top 25 Hottest Articles January - March, 2006.  Then again in 2008, he published another paper in Topology and Its Applications, ‘An arbitrary Hausdorff compactification of a Tychonoff space X obtained from a C*D-base by a modified Wallman method.’  This paper was ranked sixteenth in Science Direct Top 25 Hottest Articles, April - June, 2008.  Additionally, this paper is a solution of an open question that had been posed since 1938.

James was preceded in death by his father Ming Seng and his mother Tzung Tzua Di.  He is survived by his loving wife Mei Hua and his devoted son DiDi.

A visitation will be held on Friday, October 16, 2020 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary. Friends and colleagues are invited to share memories and words of comfort beginning at 7:00 pm that evening.
