Obituary

Oscar E. Barrera passed peacefully on Saturday, March 28, 2026, embraced by the warmth and love of his family. Born in Laredo, Texas, he spent his formative years in Zapata, where he completed his education at Zapata High School before attending Del-Mar College. A dedicated professional, Oscar devoted twenty-five years of service to Exxon, displaying commitment and diligence throughout his career.

Following his retirement, Oscar, alongside his beloved wife of forty-two years, Eva Elena “Elenita” Barrera, embarked on a new venture, founding and operating CareStat®, a business that continues to flourish, embodying their shared spirit of enterprise and care. In 2016, the couple made their home in Kingsville, Texas, where they delighted in the company of their neighbors and engaged joyfully with the community around them.

Oscar’s passion extended beyond his professional and entrepreneurial pursuits. He harbored a profound love for hunting, cherishing the many excursions shared with family, friends, and peers that enriched his life with camaraderie and treasured memories.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar E. Barrera, Sr., and Consuelo Cuellar Barrera, and his grandparents Hesiquio Cuellar and Maria Villarreal Cuellar, as well as Francisco Barrera and Matilde Martinez Barrera.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, survived by his devoted wife, Elenita; his children, Oscar Edwardo (Rebecca) Barrera and Nora Elsa (David) McCollum; and his cherished grandchildren, Ozara Barrera, Charlie Barrera, Ben McCollum, and Caty McCollum. Also surviving him are Elenita’s children, Guadalupe (Anna) Martinez, II and Celina Ruth Deforest, along with their children Jacob Deforest, Thomas Martinez, and Emma Martinez. His siblings, Yolinda (Lorenzo) Trevino, Lamar (Derly) Martinez, Rosalva (Javier) Gutierrez, Yvette Ramirez, Yvonne (Enrique) Meza, and Velma Barrera, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, mourn his loss while celebrating his life.

The family is appreciative of the caring assistance provided by Tribute Hospice, Calallen, Texas.

The family will receive condolences at St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church on Friday, April 10, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. A Rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow the Mass. The family will hold a private interment.

Oscar E. Barrera’s journey was marked by dedication and love for life that touched all who knew him. He will be remembered fondly and with great respect by his family, friends, and community.
