Omar Mendez Vela, a beloved husband, family man, and Marine veteran, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026, in Kingsville, Texas, at the age of 71. Born on April 24, 1955, in McAllen, Texas, Omar lived a life marked by dedication, warmth, and a hearty spirit that touched all who knew him.

After completing high school in California, Omar devoted over two decades of his career to working with a pool company in California, where his commitment and work ethic earned him respect and admiration. Later, he served as a driver for an adult day care in Kingsville—a role through which he continued to contribute meaningfully to his community.

A proud Marine veteran, Omar's service highlighted his loyalty and courage—qualities he carried throughout his life. Known for his jocular nature, he was a natural jokester who cherished making others laugh and was never far from sharing a smile. His love for the outdoors was evident in his hobbies—hunting, fishing, and playing guitar filled his leisure time with joy and purpose. Above all, Omar placed family at the center of his universe.

Omar’s fondest memories included lively family camping trips, cookouts, fishing excursions, and restaurant outings, occasions that celebrated his zest for life and his love of good food. These gatherings were testament to his warm and generous spirit.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Gloria Cervantes Vela; sisters Maria Elena Barrientes, Becky V. Arrollo, Raquel V. (Lupe) Zavala, Gloria Vela, and Nelda V. (Alberto) Villafuerte; stepdaughters Daniela (Chris) and Nallely; three step-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many cousins. Omar also leaves behind a legacy cherished by those who knew him, rooted in laughter, love, and unwavering dedication.

Omar was preceded in death by his parents, Jose P. Vela and Ilma M. Vela, as well as his siblings Raul M. Vela, Ramon M. Vela, Blanca V. Esparza and his late wife, Sharon Collett Vela.

A visitation will be held on May 8, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service on May 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Both services will be held at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary, Kingsville, Texas.
