Oberlin Evaristo “Obie” Riojas, 93, of Kingsville, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2025. He was born on October 26, 1931, in Mercedes, Texas, to Isidro and Paula Riojas.
Obie was a man of many talents and an unwavering work ethic. Throughout his life, he worked as a handyman, mechanic, and furniture craftsman—always finding purpose in creating, repairing, and improving the world around him. His skilled hands and inventive spirit left a lasting mark on everything he touched.
A proud veteran, Obie served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he worked in the artillery division. His service reflected the same strength, dedication, and quiet courage that he carried throughout his life.
Never one to sit still, Obie was happiest when he was busy tinkering with a motor, fixing something for a loved one, or heading out to fish with family and friends. Those moments by the water, filled with laughter and storytelling, became cherished memories for all who shared them with him.
Known lovingly as “Pippa,” he was the heart of his family. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, filling their lives with humor, warmth, and wisdom. His birthdays were legendary—joyful gatherings filled with laughter, love, and the stories he so loved to tell. Obie’s sense of humor, kind heart, and steadfast devotion to his family will forever be remembered by those who were blessed to know him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Isidro and Paula Riojas; stepmother, Oralia Riojas; sister, Juanita Salas; son, John Riojas; and granddaughter, Valerie Hernandez.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Maria Riojas; daughters Ella Maria (Miguel) Zavala, Juanita (Francisco) Bustamante, and Rosa Maria (Raul) Hernandez; son Oberlin Riojas; granddaughters Elida Rodriguez (Jamie Deal), Ella (Mondo) McMahan, Monique (Ray) Garza, Veronica (Adolario) Aguilar, Delinda (Joseph) Campos, and Crystal (Jose) Betancourt; grandsons Miguel (Donna) Zavala, Hector Rodriguez, Tobias (Cheyenne) Zavala, Raul (Nashli) Hernandez, and Roel (Jessica) Hernandez; along with numerous great-grandchildren who will carry his memory in their hearts forever.
The family will receive condolences from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Monday, October 27, 2025, at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary in Kingsville, Texas, with Military Honors following at 6:30 p.m. A Memorial Services follow immediately after Military Honors. Services will conclude that evening.
Obie will be remembered for his deep love of family, his boundless curiosity, and the laughter he brought into every room. His life was a testament to hard work, love, and faith—and though he has left this world, his spirit will live on in the countless lives he touched.
