Norma Torres

Norma Torres, 92, beloved Wife and Mother, was called to her eternal resting place on February 14, 2021 at her home in Kingsville Texas. She entered this world on November 30, 1928 in Alice, TX, born to Rachel and Geronimo Vela.

Norma held active roles in various local South Texas Baptist churches, which included being a Sunday School Teacher, Group Coordinator, and Church Choir member. As a devoted Bible reader, she was recognized by the Baptist General Convention of Texas for having read the Bible three times and was on her fourth before passing. She was a member of the Mission Service Corp for the Southern Baptist Convention and instrumental in establishing three mission sites in Washington State, where she worked every summer for 8 years. She was last a member of Faith Baptist Church in Benavides, Texas with her husband and associate pastor, Isaac Torres, where they were members for 10 years before their extensive work as missionaries nearly four decades ago.

Her long-standing missionary journey, notably in Latin America, included Puerto Rico and Brazil.  She lived in Mexico City for 7 years and alongside her husband brought the gospel to officials in the State of Tamaulipa, which included home bible studies with the State Attorney General and his staff. This culminated in the formation of Victoria En Christo (Victory in Christ) Church in Ciudad Victoria Tamaulipas, where she led bible studies for women. Norma’s presence continued to touch people internationally by giving testimonies in Europe, as well, to the countries of Spain and France. She was the pastor’s wife for two years at Canley Heights Baptist Church in Sydney, Australia where she was loved by members of diverse multicultural backgrounds.

Although Norma stood by her husband through numerous travels and revivals, she was far more than the minister’s wife. Norma was a highly creative and harmonizing individual. She appreciated the arts by enjoying quality films, stories, and music which included having a beautiful singing voice of her own. Norma had a unique ability to decorate her surroundings with a keen eye for placement.  She designed her own jewelry and coordinated her attire in a manner that was both elegant and timeless. Even though she always stood out in the crowd and lit up a room, it was never her intention. She was fine remaining in the background teaching those close to her valuable life lessons with grace. Norma, who possessed both an open heart and mind, was the example of one that personified an ideal for living. She never complained and remained non-judgmental. Loving unconditionally, Norma chose to focus her energy on all that is positive and walked through life with an unforgettable smile on her face.

She was preceded in death by both her parents; sisters, Noemi Garcia, Nivia Ramirez, Noelia Ybarra; brothers, Noe Vela, Noberto Vela, Noel Vela; and half-brother, Pedro Gonzalez.

She is survived by her husband Isaac Torres; son, Esau Torres; daughter, Zelda Turcotte; grandchildren, Michael Ruiz, Ehud Torres, Othniel Torres, Elon Torres; great-grandchildren, Jayda Herreda, Trinity Torres, Talon Torres, Lucas Torres brother, Nefi Vela.
