Michael E. Peña

Michael E. Peña, born on August 14, 1974, in Texas, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, in Kingsville. He was a beloved figure in his community, known for his kindness, honesty, and a genuine spirit that treated everyone he met as family.

He crossed various paths throughout his career, embracing his roles as an oilfield worker, truck driver, and the proud owner-operator of Mr. Peña Trucking. As a heavy equipment operator and a jack of all trades, Michael also showcased his skill in carpentry and plumbing, proving himself both capable and resourceful. His career was not simply a means of livelihood; it reflected his industrious nature and commitment to providing for those around him.

A proud alumnus of the Zapata County Independent School District, Michael’s education laid the foundation for a life marked by hard work and devotion to his family. He took immense pride in his children, who were among his greatest accomplishments, rejoicing in their achievements and instilling in them the same value of kindness and hard work that he lived by. In his later years, he embraced spirituality, taking great pride in accepting Jesus and dedicating himself to increasing his understanding of the Bible, which further enriched his interactions with those around him.

Michael’s hobbies were reflections of his vibrant personality, and his profound love for life and the people around him. He found joy in the small pleasures, such as fishing, hunting, cooking barbeque, and cherishing the countless moments spent with family during holidays. He had a particular fondness for collecting old lanterns and tools; and he enjoyed smoking and chewing tobacco, bringing a unique flair to his personality. His taste for humor and ability to make others laugh will be remembered fondly by all who knew him, as he had a remarkable way of brightening even the dullest days.

Michael left an indelible mark on the hearts of many and was admired for his dependability, love, and care for others. He was always true to himself, never pretending to be someone he was not, and consistently demonstrated generosity, giving of himself even when he had little to spare. His dream of becoming a truck driver and ultimately owning his own business was a testament to his hard work and perseverance; including his recognition as Mr. Divo 2023.

Michael is preceded in death by his parents, Enrique Peña Jr. and Rosemary K. Newton, and his brother Roberto E. DeLeon.

Among those left to mourn his loss are his beloved wife, Raquel Ruiz Peña; children, Michael E. (Rosie) Peña Jr., Dion (Delylah) Ward, Alec J. Peña, Devon M. Ruiz, Roel Y. Guajardo, Monique E. Peña, and Marcus E. Peña; siblings, Johnny R. (Christy) Campos Jr., Mark A. (Jennifer) Peña, Rosanna M. Peña, Isabel P. (Ty) Leander, and Amanda Peña; grandchildren, Shadaya Ward, Kaylani Ward, and Lylah Ward; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
