Matias Raziel Escobedo November 19, 1999 to March 12, 2021.
We lost Raz at the extremely young age of 21 as a result of complications from a heart condition that he had battled with courage, and quiet dignity for his entire life. Although his heart may have been weak, his character and love for others was overflowing. Raz had a way of touching every person’s heart that he met. Whether it was a loved one, teacher, band mate, student or random stranger, Raz made us feel comfortable, accepted, and loved. Raz was a true friend to his friends, and a loving family member to his family, always ready and willing at a moment’s notice to help teach or encourage a school mate in the ways of marching, synchronization on the field, or to take a cousin out searching for Pokémon around the college campus. We knew his love when he would raise an eyebrow, smirk and make that grunting squeal that we all knew so well.
Raz was born and is survived by his parents April Marie Cruz and Matias Cipriano Escobedo of Kingsville, Texas. He was received at heavens gates with loving arms by his maternal grandfather Raul Hinojosa Jr. He is also survived by his loving sister, and partner in crime, Kendall Lizeth Barrera, brother Sammy Escobedo, grandparents Emeteria “Teya” Hinojosa, Eusebio and Veronica Escobedo, great grandparents Cipriano and Petra Escobedo, loving second mother Amanda Suarez, stepfather Ramiro Barrera III and John Romero, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews whose love for Raz was unmeasurable.
We all knew Raz as a giant, cuddly teddy bear whose kindness was far immense and far reaching. He made marching band, R.O.T.C, and High school a fun and exciting experience for those around him. Raz’s love for music reached from his first note with the tuba in middle school until senior graduation in 2018 with the H.M. King Marching band, where he was loved and revered as a leader to many. His love and passion for music also extended far past school band including late night serenades to his girlfriend and future soul mate Rebecca. He also showed his love for music with his song writing, and his headbanging trips across town, screaming metal band song lyrics at the top of his lungs with his sister Kendall. He was so proud to wear the uniform as an R.O.T.C. member for that duration as well, and the respect he drew from those around him was awe inspiring and nothing short of incredible.
Raz had dreams of becoming a welder and was pursuing his education to achieve that goal at Coastal Bend College. He had ambitions, and was on his way to achieving them, of having his own welding rig to be able to build and provide for a large loving family. Raz would have been the loving, caring, and guiding father and uncle that we all dream of having for our own families. We all strive, pray and hope that deep down, we have inside of us the strength that he carried with him to be the sort of man that Raz was at his young age.
Raz was a creative, inspiring, loving, caring, and kind individual, the likes of whom we are rarely given the opportunity to meet once, if at all, in a lifetime! If you have known him, you will never forget him. If he has touched your life, you will always remember that no matter the odds against you, kindness, love and acceptance will always overcome all obstacles. Raz, you will always live on in our hearts, and please know that while you are up in heaven, we will miss you like the flower misses the rain, we will always love you to the moon and back always and forever, and never will we stop remembering the loving teddy bear with the raised eyebrow that brought us so much joy and love!
