Mary Josephine Smith, a beloved wife, mother, Mimi and friend, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2025, at the age of 76.
Josephine was born on July 24, 1948, in McAllen, Texas, to Joseph and Olive Allex. She was the youngest of three children. Josphine earned her bachelor's and master’s degrees in Biology from Texas A&I University. She spent 30 years shaping young minds as a Science teacher at Riviera Kaufer High School and as a Principal at Nanny Elementary School, where she was known for her ability to reach every child and her unwavering belief in every child’s potential.
To her students, she was more than a teacher — she was a mentor, a safe haven, and a lifelong inspiration. Her classroom was a place where curiosity bloomed, mistakes were part of learning, and every student felt seen and valued. Even years after graduation, many former students kept in touch to thank her for the difference she made in their lives. Outside the classroom and after retirement, Josphine continued to advocate for children with her work with Brush Country CASA.
On a personal note, Josephine loved baking, hosting people for meals, and sitting on the front porch catching up with all that stopped by. She loved her grandchildren beyond words and she was a devoted mother and wife.
Josephine is survived by her husband of 53 years, Henry M. Smith Jr. and her children: Jason (Susan) Smith and Alexa (Teddy) Carrier. She also has three grandchildren: Madelyne Carrier, Hannah Carrier, and Nate Carrier. As she would also say, she had an immense extended family that included her nieces & nephews, great nieces & nephews, friends and colleagues. She was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 10:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Kingsville, Texas with a short reception to follow. All are welcome join.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brush Country CASA to support her passion to always advocate for children.
