Luis Eduardo Cantu, affectionately known as Louie, passed away on March 18, 2026, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Born on September 17, 1940, Louie’s life was marked by a steadfast dedication to his career, family, and community.
Louie devoted 48 years of his professional life as a chef at Texas A&I University, where he worked for a variety of food service companies affiliated with the institution. His commitment went beyond the kitchen; he played an essential role in supporting the university’s special events, including banquets, visits from special guests, football games, concession stands, and other gatherings, always ensuring that those in attendance enjoyed well-prepared meals. His skilled culinary contributions left a lasting impression on many and were a testament to his dedication and pride in his work.
A kind and loving man, Louie was a close husband and father who cherished time spent with his family. He found joy in simple pleasures like taking drives to the store or running errands with his daughter, Sandra Mata Cantu. Always in good spirit, he made it a point to go into town for whatever his family desired, demonstrating his thoughtful nature. Louie’s warmth extended to his nieces and nephews, whom he loved deeply.
His hobbies reflected his generous and vibrant personality. He enjoyed barbecuing, listening to music, and gardening. Louie was also a passionate sports fan, showing unwavering support for the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, and the Dodgers, often sitting with his son and daughter to watch games together.
Louie was preceded in death by his son, Eduardo Luis Cantu Jr., his parents Hilario and Francisca Cantu, five sisters, and three brothers. He is survived by his beloved wife, Emma Cantu, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage; his daughter, Sandra Mata Cantu; his brother, Juan M. Cantu (Kina); and his cherished nieces and nephews.
The family will honor Louie’s memory with a visitation at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary located at 205 General Cavazos Blvd, Kingsville, TX 78363, from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on March 23, 2026. This will be followed immediately by a funeral service at the same location from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Santa Gertrudis Cemetery, 835 W Caesar Ave, Kingsville, TX 78363, beginning at 3:15 p.m.
Luis Eduardo “Louie” Cantu leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and love that will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His pride and ever-present smile were a beacon of warmth to his family and community.
