Our wonderful mother, JoAnn Vickers Sumney, passed peacefully on January 10, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Cmdr. Frank Sumney, and her parents, Millard & Addie Christine Vickers.
Born in her childhood home in Sodville, Texas, on September 24, 1930, JoAnn’s early years were spent as a precocious, barefoot farm child. After graduating from Taft High School, she attended Stephens College and graduated from the University of Texas before meeting her beloved husband. Frank and JoAnn moved to Kingsville in 1964 and were longtime members of the First United Methodist Church.
JoAnn lived a vibrant and full life. She was always surrounded by family and friends and remained active until her final days – reading, playing bridge, lunching with friends, working in her yard, and enjoying every moment with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her sister, Cheryl (Harold) Wright, and her three children: Kimball Sumney, Kristi (Mike) Kirchoff, and Kendra (Ralph) Huff. JoAnn was a proud grandmother to Ryland (Amanda) Kirchoff, Landon (Lauren) Kirchoff, Hunter (Erionne) Huff, and Kendall (Patrick) Huff Riley. She also leaves behind five great-grandchildren: Hailey, Ralph, Dairrin, Annabelle Huff, and Peyton Kirchoff. JoAnn also leaves behind her dear cousins Linda (Skip) Field, West, and Anita West.
The family extends our heartfelt thanks to family, friends, and neighbors for being a part of JoAnn’s life. She truly enjoyed every minute she spent with each of you.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2026, at First United Methodist Church Worship and Community Life Center, 123 N. 5th Street, Kingsville, Texas. Interment will take place at Taft Memorial Cemetery at 1:00 p.m.
