Jesse Mendez, 65, of Kingsville, passed away on April 21, surrounded by his loved ones. Jesse was born on September 23, 1960, in Kingsville to Jesus and Soila Mendez. He spent his life as a local business owner, a dedicated outdoorsman, and above all, a devoted father, devoted life partner, brother, uncle, and friend. He had a strong work ethic and was a hard worker with a big personality, known for his humor, quick wit, and unforgettable comedic comebacks that could make anyone laugh. He had a way of making everyone feel welcome.
Jesse had a deep love for the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time at the ranch—feeding his horses, watching the deer, and especially caring for his favorite cow “vaca flaca.” He also had a passion for operating heavy machinery, especially his backhoe; and took pride in the work he could do with his hands. He found joy in BBQs, family gatherings, celebrating the holidays, and traveling. He loved all animals, especially his kitty Ann and his dog Toby, and all kinds of music; he truly lived life surrounded by the people he cared about most.
He will be remembered for his kindness, strength, stubbornness, generosity, and the laughter he brought into every room. To those who knew him, Jesse was someone you could always count on—the life of every gathering and a steady presence in the lives of so many. All he ever wanted was to be surrounded by his family and friends, and above all, to see unity among them.
He shared a special and lasting bond with his forever companion, Norma, and his beloved son, Matthew, both of whom meant the world to him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jesus S. and Soila (Vela) Mendez; and brother, Robert Mendez
Among those left to cherish his memory are his forever companion, Norma Lee Garza; son, Matthew (Janette) Mendez; step-children, Carlos Reyna and Sabrina (Fidencio) Godines; sisters, Velma Mendez and Diana (Robert) Flores; aunt, Anna (Rudy) Mendez; niece, Amy (Lewis) Isassi; nephew, Robert Anthony Flores, Jr.; great-niece, Jillian Isassi; great-nephew, Joshua Isassi; and grandchildren, Kasen Samson-Mendez, Zachary, Zoey and Zadie Godines; and multiple brothers, sisters, as well as numerous nieces, and nephews.
The family will receive condolences from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary; with a holy rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Final viewing will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 1, 2026, at Turcotte-Piper Chapel. A graveside service and interment will follow at his ranch on FM 772.
The family asks that donations toward funeral expenses be made through Turcotte Mortuary.
Jesse will be deeply missed and forever loved.
“Though the hunt has ended, his journey carries on—now casting his line in the quiet waters of heaven, where peace is eternal and every catch is plentiful.”
