James Robert (Bobby) Lawson, Kingsville, TX - Bobby Lawson passed peacefully at home the evening of February 27, 2020 at the age of 79. He was born March 4, 1940 in Poteet, TX to Raleigh and Opal (Burris) Lawson. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, 2 sisters, his youngest son Rodney, and only daughter Cheri. Bobby is survived by his wife Leila (Jordan) Lawson of 61 years; 1 sister June Nixon; sons Terry and Curtis Lawson; daughter in laws Kay (Terry) and Angel (Rodney) Lawson; grandchildren Michael and Kevin Lawson, Chase Yaklin, Melissa and Jessica Nix, Hannah and Heather Lawson, Leila Lawson, and Kylie Briscoe; great grandchildren Kason and Kenlee Lawson. The Lawson’s are a huge family with so many extended friends who are also considered family.
Bobby retired after owning his own automotive business in Kingsville, Lawson’s Automotive. He was previously employed by K. A. Child’s and Matco.
Bobby was a member of the Texas A&I Javelina Club. He also played for the Javelina’s his freshman year of college. One can always say they remember Bobby and his family at the Javelina Tailgates in support of their home team!
Bobby was very active in the Kingsville community. He was a member of the Kingsville Elks Lodge #1926 for 60 years where he served as Exalted Ruler and many other positions over the years. He served as a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts, President of the H. M. King High Booster Club, President of the Lions Club, and sponsored softball in Kingsville for decades.
Bobby especially loved to play his guitar, sing, record and write country music. “Bobby Lawson and the Longriders” played many places over the years for many events. For 25 years Bobby served as a member of the South Texas Opry Band, and he was a member of the Country Music Association of Texas Hall of Fame.
He was a Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, and Friend to All. He will be greatly loved and missed by all who knew him.
The family is grateful for all the condolences extended.
There will be a memorial service held Saturday, March 14th at 1:00 PM at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary, 205 General Cavazos Blvd., Kingsville, Texas 78363. Reception following around 2:00 PM at the Kingsville Elks Lodge, 1404 South 6th Street, Kingsville, Texas 78363.
