Gladys Bertha Hoerig, age 93, passed away peacefully in Corpus Christi, Texas, on April 6.
Gladys was born on October 14, 1925, in Yoakum, TX, to Willie Richard and Hedwig Anna Hoerig, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her stepfather, John Schumacher.
Gladys is survived by two brothers, Wilfred (Victoria) Hoerig of Harlingen and Leo Hoerig of Oklahoma.
Although she had only an 8th grade education, she worked much of her adult life. She was a familiar face at Irby's Store in Bishop where she was a sales clerk. She loved to cook and bake and worked at cafes in Bishop and at Anne Dee's Café at Denton Petroleum in Driscoll. She was well known for her smiling face and delicious homemade cinnamon rolls. Even in her later years, she was recognized and greeted by patrons of Anne Dee's.
Though she never married or had children, she was a loving caregiver to her mother for many years and was a devoted and loved babysitter and caregiver for several families in the area.
In her later years, Gladys resided at Mount Carmel Assisted Living and later at Waterford Assisted Living in Corpus Christi where she will be greatly missed by staff and friends.
Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Friday, April 12, 2019 at St. John Lutheran Church in Bishop, Texas 78343 where she was a lifelong member. Graveside service will follow in Orange Grove Cemetery at 2:00 PM.
Donations/memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, 501 E. Main, Bishop.
Local arrangements are trusted to Turcotte-Piper Funeral Home in Kingsville.
