David Lee Bern, 81, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2025. Born on D-Day, June 6, 1944, David lived a life marked by quiet strength, loyalty, and kindness. A Vietnam War veteran, a skilled electrician, and a treasured friend, he will be deeply missed.
David served his country honorably during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1971. He spent nearly 20 years working at Pizza Hut, where his reliability and calm demeanor left a lasting impression. Though he lived simply and privately, David had a deep appreciation for art, history, and the things he loved.
He was a devoted dog lover, and those who knew him saw the depth of his heart in those rare moments when he let his emotions show—he only cried twice: once when his dog died, and once when mine did. That was David. Strong, stoic, and silently compassionate.
A collector of comics and Star Wars action figures, David also had a soft spot for wolves and often expressed his creativity through painted drawings.
He asked for little, gave freely, and was always the first to offer help when I needed it most.
David had no immediate family, but he leaves behind his loyal dog, Abby, and his best friend, Augie, who will care for her with the same devotion and love David always gave. To those who truly knew him, David was family.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025. The procession will leave Turcotte Funeral Home at 9:00 AM, followed by burial at 10:00 AM at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery.
Full military honors will be rendered, including the playing of Taps, a 21-gun salute, and a flag presentation ceremony in recognition of David's service to his country.
At his request, there will be no formal ceremony beyond the military honors. Those who wish to remember him are invited to do so in their own way: by adopting a rescue dog, revisiting a favorite comic, or simply offering someone the quiet, loyal support that David so freely gave.
Rest easy, David. You were my best friend.
