Dalia T. Pena, a cherished educator and devoted matriarch, gracefully departed us on July 16, 2025, in Kingsville, Texas, at the age of 90, leaving behind an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Born on March 27, 1935, Dalia embarked on a journey characterized by intellectual pursuit and passionate dedication. She graduated from McAllen High School as part of the esteemed Class of 1954, further enlightening her intellect at Texas Women’s University, where she attained her degree in education in 1957. A quest for knowledge fueled her ambition, leading her to Texas A&I, where she earned two master’s degrees — one in Bilingual Education and another in Special Education. Her remarkable achievements rendered her a model of what it means to be a lifelong learner.
Dalia's professional life was devoted to nurturing young minds, beginning her esteemed teaching career at Agua Dulce ISD before dedicating the next 45 years to Kingsville ISD at Memorial Middle School, where she specialized in Special Education. Her calling was not merely a job; it was a vocation that she approached with passion and unwavering resolve. In the classroom, Dalia's dedication excelled in education, as she embodied the spirit of support and understanding, making a profound impact on her students’ lives.
Recognized for her sharp intellect and disciplined approach, Dalia possessed a wonderful blend of wit and grace. Those who were blessed to call her a friend or family member knew her for her warm smile and the comforting wrinkle of her eye that signaled assurance, always managing to convey, “You will be okay.” Through her cooking and baking, Dalia shared her love with family and friends; and through crossword puzzles, she sharpened her mind while enjoying moments of solitude and challenge. An avid fan of football, she passionately supported the Dallas Cowboys while relishing the thrill of college football games as well.
Dalia's heart extended beyond her own family; she was known for her unwavering willingness to lend a hand to those in need, exemplifying the true essence of selflessness and compassion. Her life was an embodiment of the notion that great surprises often come in small packages, a belief that informed her every interaction and taught those around her the beauty of generosity.
Dalia's pride swelled for her children and her two beloved grandsons, who were the light of her life. As a strong-willed and independent woman, she exemplified what it means to be self-motivated and supportive, remaining fiercely loyal to her friends and continuously offering kindness to those fortunate enough to cross her path. And though she did not serve in the military, her steadfast support for the United States Armed Forces and Veterans reflected her deeply rooted respect for those who dedicated their lives to service.
In Dalia's passing, she leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories woven with love, laughter, and brilliant intellect. The legacy she crafted over decades will resonate within the hearts of her loved ones and students, embodying the grace with which she lived her life and the enduring impact she made on the world around her. May we remember her not in sorrow, but in celebration of a life exceptionally lived.
She preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Pena; parents, Filemon and Manuela (Lozano) Trevino; siblings, Baldemar Treviño, Hector Treviño, and Leo Treviño.
