Betty S. Campbell

Elizabeth Allen Saunders was the name given to Betty Campbell at birth by her parents, Charles and Mary Saunders. Born on February 5, 1930, in Kingsville, Texas, she was the fifth child of eight, born to the Saunders family. She was born in a small apartment located above a small gasoline station near the corner of 3rd and Santa Gertrudis Streets in Kingsville, Texas. The Saunders family owned the Kingsville Mattress Factory, located on 3rd Street, which was close to the Flato School and the Henrietta M. King High School that Betty attended.

Betty was living at the Windsor Nursing Home in San Diego, Texas, when she passed away around 3:30 on January 8, 2026. She often spoke about reaching 100 years old. Although she came close, we feel incredibly blessed to have had her with us until just a month before her 96th birthday. The ladies at the nursing home adored her and affectionately called her the feisty little lady.

Betty was a young stay-at-home mother of three children who were born in 1948, 1949, and 1950. She loved being a mother, but a divorce caused her life to change. In 1960, she went back to school and got her GED. That year, the Kleberg County Hospital needed nurses, so a class was offered. With the help of her family, friends, and many prayers, she was accepted into the nursing class and was able to pass the state board test. She became an LVN nurse and worked at the hospital for 32 years. She loved working in the nursery and taking the babies to their mothers in the mornings before she finished her night shift hours. While working part-time with her family, she also did upholstery for many years at the Kingsville Mattress Factory.

Betty loved to travel. Over the years, she enjoyed summer camping trips with her children and visits to Colorado to see relatives. After retiring, she journeyed to Israel multiple times, reflecting her deep affection for the Jewish people.

Betty did eventually have to move to Pleasanton from Kingsville after a short illness. She began attending the Pleasanton First Baptist Church when she met a nice man who also attended the church, and they became very good friends. She thought she would never want to marry again, but he convinced her that he would be a good husband to her. On June 12, 2010, at 80 years of age, Betty became J.C. Campbell's wife. They had a beautiful wedding and were together for almost 5 years before his death. That marriage was full of some of her cherished memories.

Preceding Betty's death were her parents, Charles and Mary Saunders; her husband, J. C. Campbell; six siblings, Nanalee, Louise Walshe, Charlie Saunders, Jimmy Saunders, Wilma Dollery, and John Saunders; a daughter, Caryl Hudson; daughter-in-law, Cathy Eddy; and granddaughter, Cheyanne Eddy Crabb.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Linda Eddy Wientjes (Robert); a son, Don Eddy; grandchildren, Wayne Wientjes, Lloyd Wientjes (Sheila), Chris Eddy (Denise), Shelly Stamport (Shelby), Keith Roberts, Jerry Flowers (Shannon), and Bruce Hudson (Julie); great-grandchildren, Caitlyn Wientjes, Courtney Wientjes, Stetson Eddy, Dallas Eddy, Justin Eddy, Dakota Stamport, Bradley Stamport, Lily Roberts, Blaine Roberts, Regina Flowers, Willam Hudson, Sheldon Hudson, and Philip Hudson.

A funeral service will take place at 11:00 am, January 16, 2026, at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary, followed by a committal service at Chamberlain Cemetery in Kingsville, Texas, alongside her beloved parents and siblings.
