Barbara Anne May

Barbara Anne (Ficklin) May was born September 15, 1937, in Houston, Texas to Bertha and Terry Ficklin.  She passed away peacefully on September 23, 2021, in her home.  She was the youngest of three children.  She grew up in Kingsville, Texas and graduated from King High where she was a cheerleader and on the debate team.  She met her husband of 62 years, Laverne May, while in high school.  They dated through high school and while she went to business school in Houston, and he went to Texas A&M University in College Station.  They married on September 12, 1959, in St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church in Kingsville, Texas.  The couple then moved on to Arizona and New Jersey to follow their career and military paths.  The couple had their first son, Laverne Jr (Pudin), while living in New Jersey.  Barbara and Laverne then moved back to Houston, Texas and had 3 more children, Edward, Kurt, and Stacy.  Barbara became a stay-at-home mom, a role which she treasured dearly.  Raising her children was her greatest joy and challenge at times.  The couple moved to Rosenberg, Texas in 1976 and still lived in the same home up until her passing.  She was fiercely loyal and supportive of her family which she felt nothing more could be as important in her life.  She taught her children unconditional love and support through her constant actions of being wherever they needed her.  She was a devoted wife and worked alongside her husband, Laverne, in the business endeavors they undertook through out their lifetime.  Mom was not one to mince words.  She always said what she meant, and you knew where she stood.  Hopefully you were on the same side as her!  She was a devout Catholic and taught her family the importance of faith through her daily examples even as her children were grown and gone.  She has nine grandchildren whom she loved dearly.  She enjoyed family trips with all the grandchildren to South Padre Island on a yearly basis when the children where young.  She enjoyed spending time down at her bay house in Riviera with grandchildren as well.  In later years, she enjoyed reading and visiting with family while drinking wine with Laverne.  Her loyalty to family will never be forgotten and will always be cherished.

She leaves behind her loving husband of 62 years, Laverne May, her sons, Laverne Jr (Annaliese), Edward, and Kurt (Lori), and daughter Stacy Gage (Grady).  Her grandchildren, who knew her as Grandmama, will always remember how much she loved them.  Her grandchildren are Haley and Kenedy May, Grady Jr, Sarita (Gage) Gilley/husband Spencer Gilley, Sophie, Tess, and Spencer Gage, and Savannah and Connor May.

The family would like to thank her caregivers who gave kind and loving care to her at home during her final year- Theresa, Susan, Jennifer, and Christy.

The family will receive condolences on Friday, October 1, 2021, at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary, 205 General Cavazos Blvd., from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM; with a holy rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM.  A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 2, 202 at Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church.  A Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at Our Lady of Consolation Cemetery, Vattmann, TX.
