Barbara Leigh Benson (Yunk) of Bishop, Texas, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2026, after courageously facing a long and hard-fought illness. Born on August 19, 1948, in Corpus Christi, Texas, Barbara lived a life filled with creativity, love, and devotion.
An artist at heart, Barbara delighted in all things creative. She cherished watercolor painting, proudly sharing her beautiful works at art shows. Her passion extended to helping her beloved husband, Dan, with his woodworking projects—painting, decorating, and lovingly canning fresh garden produce together. Their shared joy in homegrown and home-brewed wine, carefully labeled by Barbara herself, reflected the deep bond they treasured.
Barbara graduated from high school in Uvalde and earned her degree from Southwest Texas Junior College, where her father once taught as a professor. Her family always remained central in her life.
To her children, Charlotte, Celeste, and Eric, she was lovingly known as “Mom” and “Mommy.” For her grandchildren, Hannah, Heather, and October, she was their cherished “Grandma Barbara,” and to her best friends, simply “Barb.”
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Frances and Robert Yunk, and brother David Yunk.
She is survived by the love of her life, her husband Dan Benson; siblings, Jeff Yunk(Carolyn) and Vickie Marin; daughter Charlotte Hernandez and granddaughters Hannah Lawson (Kayla) and Heather Lawson (Abby); great-grandchildren Kason, Kenlee, and baby Kyler who will be here in August; daughter Celeste Ude; son Eric Ude and granddaughter October Ude; and the beloved grandpups.
Barbara will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, her love of live music, and the peaceful pleasure she found in beach combing. Most of all, she will be celebrated for the warmth and joy she infused into every moment spent homemaking with Dan, surrounded by family and friends.
A Holy Rosary honoring Barbara’s life will take place on Saturday, May 16, 2026, beginning at 10:00 AM, followed by a Liturgy at 10:30 AM at St. Gertrude Catholic Church.
Barbara's grace, creativity, and unwavering love have left an enduring imprint on all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
