Avaul Vernon Smith Jr., a man of unwavering dedication and a zest for life, passed away peacefully on August 12th, 2023, at the age of 85. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, love and resilience. Avaul was born on July 3,1938 in Jacksonville, TX.
Avaul's life was marked by a profound commitment to duty and an adventurous spirit. He began his journey by enlisting in the Marine Corps, where he demonstrated remarkable courage and discipline. Serving his country with commitment to duty and honor during the Vietnam Era.
After his service in the Marine Corps, Avaul transitioned into a new chapter of his life, becoming a dedicated game warden. His role as a protector of wildlife and nature reflected his deep appreciation for the outdoors. Avaul's dedication to preserving the environment for future generations was evident in his unwavering commitment to his work. Later, Avaul pursued a career as a carpenter, showcasing his skilled craftsmanship and dedication. Avaul's dedication to his craft earned him the respect and admiration of those who knew him.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Avaul had a deep passion for the natural world. He found solace and joy in gardening, cultivating vibrant and thriving vegetation that mirrored his nurturing spirit. Fishing and hunting were more than hobbies for Avaul; they were outlets for his connection with nature and an opportunity to share these experiences with loved ones.
He is preceded in death by his wife Daisy Louise Smith; daughters, Jodie Dukes and Sylivia Maye Sylvester; parents Avaul Sr. and Buela “Suzy” Smith; and sister Mona Gautney.
Among those left to cherish his memory are his children, Jackie Hays, Brenda (James) Helgren, Valerie Aho, and Vernon (Monique) Smith; sister, Mary Sue (Weeks) Dubose; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
As we bid farewell to Avaul Vernon Smith Jr., we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by service, dedication, and an unyielding love for the great outdoors and family. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his spirit will continue to inspire us to embrace life's adventures with the same vigor and enthusiasm that defined his journey.
The family will receive condolences from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary; with a eulogy to take place at 5:00 p.m. A rite of committal and interment with military honors will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 25, 2023, at Houston National Cemetery.
