Adan Munoz Jr., 71, passed away on January 4, 2020 In Austin, Texas.
He was born on March 10, 1948 in Kingsville, Texas to Adan Munoz, Sr. and Josefa R. Munoz. He was raised on King Ranch, attended school in Kingsville and graduated from H.M. King High School in 1966. He married Armida Alaniz in 1968 and joined the Navy in 1969. Adan began his law enforcement career in 1971 with the Kingsville Police Department and moved to the Kleberg County Sheriff’s Department in 1974. During his law enforcement career he worked in all divisions including; Patrol Officer, Sergeant and Lieutenant of Patrol; and Chief Investigator of KSO. He was elected Sheriff in 1988 and became the first Hispanic Sheriff of Kleberg County and served as Sheriff from 1988 to 1994. HE moved to Austin in 1994 to serve the Governor as the first Hispanic Executive Director of Criminal Justice for the State of Texas. In 2006, Adan became the first Hispanic Executive Director of the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.
He is preceded in death by his parents Josefa and Adan, Sr.
He is survived by his wife, Armida Munoz; children, Albert Munoz, Andrea Munoz, Adan Munoz III,; grandchildren, Victoria Miller, Sydney Miller, Abigail Munoz; Great Grandson, Johnothan Garza; brothers, Abie Munoz, Tito Munoz, Hector Munoz; several nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and his entire law enforcement family.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at J.K. Northway Coliseum, 501 Escondido Rd. from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a Rosary at 6:00 pm. Funeral procession will depart the funeral home at 10:15 AM on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 for a 11:00 AM Funeral Mass at St Gertrude the Great Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Chamberlain Cemetery.
